FXL: Tough Enough for the Harshest Desert Yet Flexible for Every Bend - Riyadh Saudi Arabia

In 2011, a major supplier of mobile communications technology in the growing Riyadh market needed a feeder cable solution for monopole transmission towers that could stand up to this punishing environment— while providing the flexibility during installation to make critical bends between the monopole and a nearby shelter.

This job needed a better, reliable option suited to the harsh environment and complex bends it required—particularly in the critical bending points between the base of the tower, around the cable tray and into the adjoining shelter. The telecommunications company found the answer in HELIAX®   FXL smoothwall cable from CommScope. With over 100 million feet (30 million meters) deployed worldwide under some of the roughest conditions, it was easy to see why FXL was the strategic choice.

The right cable solution for extreme environments
Harsh conditions and multiple difficult bends called for a better feeder cable solution. HELIAX®   FXL smoothwall from CommScope met every challenge.

Fully Triple Bonded  for Superior Performance, Easy Handling
The patented design of HELIAX  FXL makes it truly distinct from traditional corrugated
copper cable—and the perfect alternative for this application. Its smoothwall outer conductor design permits full triple bonding throughout the cable for enhanced performance and weatherproofing characteristics.

FXL features a unique triple-bonded smoothwall construction with a filled center conductor resulting in outstanding electrical and PIM performance even in tight bends.

This unique design makes HELIAX  FXL virtually impervious to water migration and offers enhanced resistance to wind, abrasive sands and vibration. Plus, its smoothwall construction prevents performance degrading damage during installation, so users can often specify smaller cable diameters—as much as 30%  smaller— and still ensure superior performance and reduced attenuation. That option makes HELIAX  FXL less expensive to install, lighter to transport and easier to handle than traditional corrugated copper cables.

HELIAX FXL gets the job done
HELIAX FXL’s smoothwall design prevents kinking during install and bends easily, precisely and permanently—so smaller, less expensive diameters still get the job done.

Flexible Enough to Bend, Rigid Enough to Hold Shape
The real test arose in the way HELIAX  FXL handled three bends between the base of the monopole and the adjacent shelter. The tight turns in this installation required a solution that would bend easily and hold its shape without assistance.

CommScope technicians installed six FXL-1873 (1-5/8”) smoothwall cables. After adding connectors to the cables, the installers successfully made the three critical bends without difficulty using standard installation and automated cable preparation tools:
1. From the monopole onto the cable tray
2. Around a 90-degree turn on the cable tray
3. FXL-1873 (1-5/8”) cable exiting the monopole onto the cable tray and into the shelter

CommScope hoisting grips prevented any slippage during the process, assuring a trouble-free installation.

HELIAX FXL competitive advantage
In this installation alone, the customer saved 50% and can realize a 9% improvement in performance over a similar copper installation.

A Smooth Advantage in a Growing Market
  • Engineered for low-PIM performance
  • Fully bonded  design provides excellent weather resistance
  • Up to 30% lighter, three times stronger and 200% more crush resistant than copper  corrugated cables.
  • Easy to handle and 70% more stretch resistant than corrugated cable.
  • Smoothwall construction holds desired bend shapes without assistance.

The result is a feeder cable assembly ready for anything the desert throws its way with reduced future maintenance costs. CommScope’s telecommunications customer saved 40% on the installation compared to the material cost and added labor of using traditional copper cable. Plus, the unique design of HELIAX  FXL means a potential performance improvement of up to 9%.
Now this telecommunication company is ready to meet increased demand in Riyadh and ensure the performance of its tower installation, while CommScope is proud to play an important role in the success of another wireless network story.

LTE Active Antenna Field Trial Yields Successful Results

The recent 700 MHz LTE active antenna system field trial is certainly a memorable moment for closing out 2011. This was a successful opportunity for CommScope to demonstrate the features of active antennas in a true multi-site field trial and provide a glimpse of what we can expect in the future.
Active antenna systems basically consist of integrating the functionality of a traditional remote radio head (RRH) and a dual-polarized antenna into a single housing that can now be deployed at the top of the tower. The active antenna electronics are distributed within the antenna, such that each radiating element will now have its own dedicated transmit and receive paths. This distributed architecture now provides one with the ability to control the amplitude and phase of each radiating element. This is one of the key considerations that enable the feature set of active antenna systems.
Have a look at the white paper, active antenna system presentation, and press release for more details.
What did the LTE field trial tell us?
    • The overall active antenna system performance compared well with traditional passive antennas and remote radio heads. This was confirmed by monitoring key performance indicators, such as signal-to-noise levels and uplink and downlink throughput rates. The same high performance LTE throughput levels were achievable with an active antenna system.
    • The ability to independently tilt uplink and downlink elevation patterns was effective. This is an important feature that can now allow the radio planner to further optimize patterns and increase sector throughput.
    • The ability to implement vertical sectorization showed significant promise for increasing capacity. Essentially, one carrier is dedicated for the inner sector, while a second carrier is dedicated for the outer sector. The results also were in excellent agreement with simulations.
    • The self-healing feature of active antennas was implemented and also shows great potential for addressing system availability concerns. By simulating a failure of an individual transceiver path, a new optimized pattern was immediately implemented. Drive tests reinforced that theoretical predictions were accurate.
    • The ease of installation of the active antenna system was also a pleasant surprise. The field installation team was able to use all of the same hoisting and installation equipment as they normally would use for a passive antenna. The mounting hardware and grounding kits were identical to what they use for otherCommScopeproducts.
    • Once the antennas were mounted on the towers, it was encouraging to see how well the appearance blended in with the existing antennas. The photo below shows the antenna at the final installation phase. The cell-site owners were very pleased to see that the appearance was similar to antennas deployed today and would not impact leasing costs.
We and our technology partner Ubidyne are pleased with the results of what we believe was the first-ever LTE field trial of an active antenna system. We believe this is an important step toward the promise of better, more cost effective ways to transmit broadband signals to mobile customers using next generation networks.
How do you think active antennas can play a role in 4G networks? What challenges are you facing?

Indonesian Networks Expect a Slow-Down in Profit Growth

By: Ian Mansfield |
Indonesia's three largest telecoms network operators, XL Axiata, Indosat and Telkomsel have said that they are likely tosee decreased profit growth this year.
PT Xl Axiata executive director Hasnul Suhaimi said the decline was likely caused by the saturated voice-based market. "Everybody now tends to seek alternative services rather than voice-based," the Jakarta Post quotes him as saying, citing a report by tempointeraktif.
He added that this year profit would likely increase by 6 to 7 percent.
PT Indosat public relations division head Djarot Handoko confirmed declining profit expectations but stated that it was due to the blocking of recent premium services by the government.

Argus Jumps to CommScope

Argus Jumps to CommScope: pCommScope completes the strategic acquisition of Argus, which is based in Australia and provides high capacity antennas for large venues. The expanded antenna solutions portfolio and deeper research and development capabilities help CommScope meet the next generation growth requirements in the wireless market./p

A hearty welcome to the Argus Technologies team! They have joined CommScope now that the acquisition is complete.
We certainly are glad to add their excellent technology, proven innovation and specialized solutions such as high capacity antennas for large venues. Argus, based near Sydney, has been a well-respected competitor in the wireless network antenna market since its founding in 1994. Now, we expect that their many strengths and talents will enable us at CommScope to broaden our antenna solutions portfolio, deepen our research and development capabilities, strengthen our global market presence and accelerate our overall growth in the wireless market.

This is an interesting—and promising—time for providers of antennas, and all other infrastructure, in the wireless market. The demand for bandwidth and growth in network traffic continues to drive investment into infrastructure. And the evolution to next generation technologies, whether 2G to 3G, or 3G to 4G, is creating new opportunities for deployment of innovative antenna technologies as part of an overall RF Path solution, such as the solutions provided by CommScope.
Bandwidth requirements also are driving growth—and needs for more innovative solutions—in the other markets we serve. That is one major reason behind another recent strategic acquisition we made, that of Montreal-based LiquidxStream, which became part of CommScope in June. LiquidxStream is helping us move more deeply and quickly into advanced solutions for the cable TV market.
Watch for more exciting developments in the antenna space from CommScope in the future. We, with Argus, already are hard at work!
